About Us

Welcome to the Early Childhood Lab School (ECLS), a vital part of the UC Davis Center for Child and Family Studies (CCFS) within the Department of Human Ecology. At ECLS, we are more than an early childhood education program—we are a vibrant, collaborative learning community.

A Community of Learners

Our staff, children, families, university students, and researchers all learn together in an environment grounded in inquiry, reflection, and respect. We are deeply committed to understanding every facet of child development in order to provide a model program of early care and education—one that inspires and prepares the next generation of educators, researchers, parents, and child advocates.

Our Unique Role as a University Lab School

As a university-based lab school, our work extends far beyond the traditional classroom. We serve a diverse range of participants:

  • Undergraduate and graduate students gaining hands-on experience
  • Faculty and researchers conducting studies that shape best practices
  • Children and families receiving high-quality care and education
  • Community observers and professionals who rely on our expertise to inform their own work

Meeting the needs of these multiple constituencies requires a clear sense of purpose, transparent policies, and thoughtful practices. We pride ourselves on our ability to adapt, communicate, and collaborate to support every individual who engages with our program.

Our Mission in Action

We believe in the power of respectful, intentional learning—for children and adults alike. Through ongoing dialogue, flexibility, and shared problem-solving, we continuously evaluate and refine our practices to better serve our community and advance the field of early childhood education.

At ECLS, we’re not just educating children—we’re shaping the future of child development, one relationship at a time.
